In the "Hauptstadtkulturvertrag"
(Capital City Cultural Agreement) of 1999, the Federal Government of Germany
and the City and State of Berlin set up the Hauptstadtkulturfonds in order
to support projects and events that are of national and international
importance for Berlin as the federal capital of Germany, and/or are particularly
innovative.
By supporting contemporary cultural and artistic projects, the Fund should provide a basis in Berlin for supporting and promoting supra-regional and international cultural dialogues. The projects should be produced for and presented in Berlin, but should additionally be relevant for lay or specialist audiences outside of Berlin or compensate for existing cultural deficits in Berlin.
