We use the Virtual Reality Modeling
Language (VRML) standard as our real-time 3D graphics technology platform.
The VRML browser plug-in is supplied by our technical sponsor Bitmanagement
Software GmbH. (See the link "Supporters.".)
Each 3D scene required several
production steps:
- The layout and construction
of the 3D space had to be defined along with any portals and hotspots.
- The 3D objects were modeled
and textured, animated when necessary, exported to VRML format and placed
in the scene along with any archival media materials, lighting and sound
effects that set the cultural and political context of the scene.
- The individual scenes were linked to each other in
a VRML main program according to the hyper-storyboard in order to create
the desired dramatic structure of the virtual experience. This is the
phase in which the interactivity is programmed, such as user-triggered
sensors that cause changes within a scene.
- The final phase was the visual design and programming
of the user interface, and the design of the input and navigation console.
